Abstract

"The art of building is an invisible whole. In every structure, meaningful construction and eco-efficiency are as critical as functionality and design. Form and supporting structures are only effective if they meld together to become one entity that does not beg scrutiny and is perceived as part of a comprehensive culture of building." Remaining true to this maxim of its founder Jörg Schlaich, the engineering office Schlaich, Bergermann und Partner has for more than 30 years worked successfully with a variety of architects on a highly diverse range of projects all over the world. Now under its second generation of leadership, the office continues to stand as much for clear and innovative designs for bridges, buildings and solar power plants as it does for a holistic approach to the thery and practice of engineering.

Abstract

Behind every extraordinary building, there is an excellent architect - and a no less brilliant structural engineer. In the perception of the public and in the relevant publications, however, it is still primarily the architect who gets the credit for being the author of a design, the creator of a spectacular piece of the built environment. The DETAIL engineering series strives to remedy that by focusing deliberate attention on the engineers involved in the business of building. This volume profiles "Schlaich Bergermann und Partner" which for more than 30 years has been active internationally in the most diverse fields, from bridge engineering to developing large solar power plants.
